Supreme Court affirms INEC’s power to un-register political parties

The Supreme Court has affirmed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) power to deregister political parties.

The affirmation was made on Friday May 7 in a lawsuit filed by one of the 74 political parties deregistered by INEC in February 2020.

Member of the Supreme court’s panel, Chima Nweze who delivered the lead judgment on the appeal filed by National Unity Party (NUP), said INEC rightly exercised its powers conferred on it by the Nigerian constitution in deregistering the party last year.
