The Super Eagles will be desperate to put an end to their seven-game winless run in friendly matches when they file out against Mexico at the Los Angeles Coliseum in the United States of America on Sunday.
Record shows that Nigeria and Mexico will battle each other at the Los Angeles Coliseum for the sixth time in the history of the most-loved game of football.
The Super Eagles are, however, winless in their last five meetings with the North American country with a record of three draws and two defeats.
Their last encounter, meanwhile, was an international friendly in Atlanta back in March 2014 and it ended in a goalless draw at the Georgia Dome.
The Super Eagles are also currently suffering the hugely disappointing record of a winless run in their last seven international friendly outings.
Their last win in a friendly match was in March 2019 when Paul Onuachu scored the only goal that gave them a 1-0 victory over Egypt in the first minute.
That is a whopping two years and four months as the record includes five draws and two losses against Algeria last October (1-0) and Cameroon last month (1-0).
On the other hand, El Tri of Mexico have a massive ambition as they are aiming to end their preparation for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup with a win on Sunday morning.
The defending North American champions started their 2021 MexTour Series on May 30 with a 2-1 win over Iceland followed by a goalless draw with Honduras and a 3-0 thrashing of Panama in Nashville on Thursday morning.
They will be looking to clinch their 12th Concacaf Gold Cup title when the tournament begins on July 10.
Mexico can count on Real Betis’ Diego Lainez and Napoli’s Hirving Lozano as both players have either scored or assisted a goal in the country’s last six games.
The two wingers are key players in Gerardo Martino’s squad and they boast of 17 goals combined for the Mexico national team.
Nigeria have a difficult task on their hands, though, as the West African nation only turned to their home-based players to prosecute the encounter.
The 22 players that traveled to Los Angeles were drawn from the Nigerian Professional Football League because of the unavailability of the foreign-based stars who are preparing for pre-season with their clubs.
