Ese Brume wins Nigeria’s first medal at Tokyo Olympics

Nigeria has finally gotten its first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after Ese Brume claimed a bronze medal after finishing third in the women’s long jump event in the early hours of Tuesday August 3.

Brume leapt 6.97 metres with her very first jump to claim bronze behind second-placed Brittany Reece of the United States and gold medallist Malaika Mihambo of Germany.

This is Nigeria’s first medal in athletics at the Olympic Games in 13 years.

Brume, who is the African record holder in the women’s Long Jump event, had qualified for the final stage on Sunday with a jump of 6.76m, 1cm more than the required mark. She finished with the fourth overall best jump among the finalists before going into Tuesday’s final to win Nigeria’s first medal.

She joins Okagbare and Glory Alozie as the only Nigerians to win individual medals at both the Worlds and the Olympics.
