Bordeaux releases fresh statement on Samuel Kalu’s heart condition after he collapsed on the pitch

French Ligue 1 club, Bordeaux, has released the latest update on winger Samuel Kalu’s heart condition after the Nigerian international collapsed on the pitch against Marseille last weekend.

The 23-year-old Nigerian dropped to the ground just five minutes into their game amid soaring temperatures at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday August 15. The incident sparked concern for Kalu as players from both sides called for medical attention.

At one point, the players formed a human shield around Kalu while he was being treated on the field in scenes similar to what was seen when Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest in Demark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland.

Thankfully, Kalu made a quick recovery and was able to stand on his feet. He was walked off the pitch by his teammates while holding an ice pack against his head but later returned to carry on playing before he was substituted for Remi Oudin.

On Tuesday, Bordeaux issued a statement and confirmed that the Nigerian winger is fine after tests showed he had no heart problems.

“More fear than harm for Samuel Kalu as our Nigerian international is fit to resume training on Wednesday,” Bordeaux said on their website (girondins.com) on Tuesday.

“All the additional examinations carried out on Tuesday showed no cardiac abnormalities and Kalu should be in contention for Sunday’s home match against Angers.”
