Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has disclosed that the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) players doesn’t have what it takes to compete with the team’s foreign stars at the biggest stage of the game.
The German tactician made this known while reacting to questions from journalists on why he refused to invite more home based players to the Super Eagles squad that will face Liberia and Cape Verde in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
He said: “I hear this question all the time and I give the same question all the time. I take the best players and actually the home based players are not in competition, they stopped it already a few weeks ago. But I took some of them, I took Adekunle; who plays for Abia Warriors, you must have seen him in training.
“So, the home based players have a chance if they’re doing well. But they’re not in competition so it’s very difficult for them to be better than the players in Europe, who are playing all the time in their clubs at a very high level.”
Recall that the senior national team will face Liberia at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on Friday before battling Cape Verde on September 7.
