ASUU sues Governor Obaseki over suspension of Union activities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has filed a lawsuit against Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, for suspending all union activities across state-owned higher institutions.

Recall that Edo state government had also directed the management of the institution to implement a “no-work-no-pay policy,” declare vacant and advertise the position of any staff member that refuses to resume work.

Ambrose Alli University chapter of ASUU in the lawsuit filed before the National Industrial Court in Benin, urged the court to declare that the suspension was unconstitutional, illegal, null and void, and ultra vires the powers of the defendants.

Other defendants in the suit are the Edo State government, and Attorney-general and the Commissioner for Justice.

No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit.
