The Edo State House of Assembly on Monday April 8, impeached the embattled state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
The impeachment followed the adoption of the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the state Chief Judge to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu.
Last week, the Edo House of Assembly started the impeachment proceedings against Shaibu. Twenty-one of the 24 lawmakers signed a petition to that effect.
They accused Shaibu of perjury and disclosure of the state government’s secrets.
Shaibu has been in a running battle with his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, after he signified interest to contest run for governor of the state after Obaseki’s tenure ends in September 2024.
Meanwhile, Omobayo Godwin has been sworn in as Edo state Deputy Governor. This comes hours after Philip Shaibu was impeached by the state House of Assembly. Governor Godwin Obaseki this morning, nominated 37-year-old Omobayo as his Deputy shortly after the impeachment of Philip Shaibu.
Omotayo was sworn in around 1:40 pm on Monday by Edo Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa in a ceremony held at the Edo State Government House in Benin City.
