Finidi appointed Rivers United technical manager

Former Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has been announced as the new manager of Rivers United.

The club revealed the appointment of the 52-year-old in a post on its X account on Wednesday, July 3.

Finidi accepted the role a few weeks after stepping down as head coach of Nigeria’s men’s national team. His resignation followed a brief tenure where he managed only two competitive games since his appointment in April.

During his short stint, Finidi led the Super Eagles to a 1-1 home draw against South Africa and a 2-1 loss to the Benin Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. These results placed Nigeria fifth in their qualification group, with previous draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe contributing to their position.

The team’s performance drew significant criticism from Nigerians, particularly on social media.

Rivers United marks the second Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) team that Finidi will manage, following his successful tenure at Enyimba, where he led them to the 2022/23 NPFL title.
