Paris 2024 Paralympics: Onyinyechi Mark wins Nigeria’s first Gold medal at Women’s Powerlifting event, setting new record

Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark achieved a significant milestone on Friday, September 6, by winning gold in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Mark’s performance in Paris not only secured gold but also broke both the Paralympic and world records with an extraordinary lift of 150kg, surpassing the previous record held by Nigerian powerlifter, Lucy Ejike.

China’s Cui Jianjin lifted 140kg to secure the silver medal, while Mexico’s Amalia Pérez recorded 130kg to win bronze.

This victory is a testament to Nigeria’s strong record in Paralympic powerlifting category. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Nigeria claimed 10 medals, including four golds.
