I didn’t come to Nigeria because of money – Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle

Eric Chelle has revealed he took a pay cut to become the coach of the Super Eagles because he believes in the potential of the team and wants to make a lasting impact.

“When I came to Nigeria, I didn’t come here because of money. I was earning more in my last job. I came to Nigeria because this is a very big team and I want to prove something, to achieve something. I came here for the challenge. Nothing has changed about that,” he said in an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.

Chelle and the Super Eagles are currently under pressure as they battle for qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Their next fixtures are crucial, with Rwanda visiting Uyo next month, followed by a decisive clash in South Africa.

Despite the pressure and uncertainty surrounding his position, Chelle remains calm and focused.

“I know, quite well, that I can be fired after one match. This is the life in football,” he stated. “But if they decide to do that, they must be prepared to pay up the remainder of my contract.”
