The Presidential candidate of the Labour party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has reacted to President Tinubu’s approval of a 50 per cent slash in the price of interstate transport fare for Nigerians travelling during the yuletide from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.
In a statement released on his X handle, Obi mentioned that the decision is a step in the right direction but wonders what happens after the yuletide. He asked if the Federal government has put in place a sustainable policy measure to cushion the masses from the current high transportation costs. He asked if those who have already travelled and bore the high cost of transportation will be refunded or compensated.
Obi said he sent out people to confirm if the transportation palliative by the Federal government is being implemented and that the feedback he is getting is quite disappointing. He mentioned that the Federal government announced a few transport companies chosen to participate in the intervention for which 28 Routes have been designated but that no word was given as to how it will carry out checks and balances to ensure that the transporters follow the terms of the contract.
