Senate convenes emergency sitting over supplementary budget

The Senate has reportedly called for an emergency session to address President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s supplementary appropriation for the 2024 fiscal year.

Both the House of Representatives and the Senate began their recess last week, with plans to reconvene on July 2, 2024.

However, on Wednesday, June 26, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, announced that the Senate would hold a plenary session on Thursday to address various issues, including the appropriation bill.

He said;

“It’s our statutory resumption from the Sallah break. Senate has the constitutional power to regulate its sessions and we believe that we could gain one more legislative day to deal with national and constitutional issues, hence the bringing forward from the initial July 2.

“We hope to deal with issues concerning our further oversight on the appropriations and clear further the hanging issues of constitutional and electoral concerns. And clear outstanding bills and motions, expectedly before our annual recess, later in the year.”

Daily Trust has however reported that the cost of the yet-to-be-acquired presidential jet will be included in the budget. This is however coming after Senate President Godswill Akpabio refuted reports that the senate proposed purchase of new presidential jets.
