Why I aid mentally deranged people on the streets of Istanbul -Mehmet Yeralan

Reasons have finally emerged why persons of unstable minds, otherwise known as ‘lunatics’ are often given a helping hand by Mr. Mehmet Yeralan (Tarlabasi Daganisma).

Reports have it that Mr. Mehmet for many years now have taken up the responsibility of helping any mentally deranged people he sees in the streets of Istanbul.

In a world of rancor, terror, chaos and pandemic, one would least expect an individual to render selfless help to a group of persons often relegated by majority of persons in the society, as may be regarded as being out of human realm of thought.

Such description however differs from the likes of Mr. Mehmet Yeralan (Tarlabasi Daganisma), he does not only treat them right, but goes extra miles in showing them love, care and compassion for their unfortunate state of mind, with the hope and prayers for them to regain their sanity.

Recent developments showed that a Nigerian, Mr. Etok Wisdom Obot, under the custody of Mr. Mehmet, the Prince Emre Magboh led-Nigerian Community Turkey (NICOT), represented by the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onyezonwu Isreal Gift paid a visit to Mr. Mehmet’s residence in Tarlabasi where Mr. Etok was been rehabilitated for over three months.

During an interactive session, Ifiok who seem to be responding to treatment said that he hails from Akwa-Ibom State in Nigeria, and had spent over four years in Istanbul.

Etok stated that his aim for coming to Turkey was to further his education but could not continue his program due to lack of financial support.

When asked of his welfare, Mr. Etok admitted that he has no problem for rents, bills, drugs and clothing as he expressed comfort while speaking from his bed space.

Delighted with his selfless services to humanity, the representative of NICOT engaged Mr. Mehmet in a parley to unravel reasons behind his care and love for people with mental health challenges.

In his response, Mr. Mehmet re-echoed that he chose to take up the responsibility because he believes that all men are equal before God, no matter where he or she comes from.

He revealed that Mr. Etok was one among many, from different nations of the world that he caters for under his roof. He also recalled that another Nigerian, Mr. Timothy once stayed under his care for a month before he regained his sanity and was let out into the society again to live a normal life.

Mr. Mehmet maintained that every human being deserve to be treated nicely, stressing that whenever a mentally deranged person is seen loitering along streets of Istanbul, the authorities always draw his attention to take care of the person, which he said he doesn’t hesitate.

According to Mr. Mehmet, “selfless service I render to the people cuts across all boundary/boarders, I take care of mentally ill persons from different nations of the world, and I don’t discriminate as far as the person is a human being”.

“I take care of their needs single handedly, I even take them on routine checks at the hospital, sometime I get them their traditional cuisines from respective restaurants. All I do I do for Allah, because black or white, Christian or Muslim we are all same in the eyes of Allah”, Mr. Mehmet concluded.

While handing over the travelling certificate of Etok and some money to Mr. Mehmet, the NICOT PRO, Mr. Gift gave a brief account of the community’s effort towards ensuring that Mr. Etok is re-united to his family in Nigeria, he highlighted the effort of the Nigeria community President in Turkey, Prince E. Magboh, who gave the sum of $200 (two hundred Dollars) for Etok’s ticket and in appreciation of Mr. Memhet’s effort.

It was revealed that Mr. Etok will be leaving for Nigeria on Friday, 19th March, 2021.
