2026 WCQ: Benin coach Gernot Rohr anticipates ‘difficult’ Super Eagles clash

Gernot Rohr, head coach of the Benin Republic national team, is expecting a tough challenge when his side faces the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

The Cheetahs are scheduled to take on Nigeria next week at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Rohr’s team recently boosted their qualification hopes with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday night. Tosin Aiyegun scored the winning goal for Benin 10 minutes from time.

Speaking after the win against Rwanda, the German coach admitted the upcoming game against the Super Eagles will be a significantly different and more demanding challenge for his side.

“It was a very tactical match. A difficult match with very little football. But since it was so important, you can’t come here to put on a show,” Rohr told reporters, reflecting on the Rwanda match. “We were here to get a result. Playing against Osimhen, Lookman, Simon, Iwobi. That’s another story. This result builds confidence.”
