AFCON 2025: CAF opens investigation into Nigeria vs Algeria clash, As Super Eagles squad train behind closed doors ahead of semi – final with Morocco

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into the disturbances that followed Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Marrakech.

CAF is reviewing reports from match officials, security personnel and media representatives to determine the circumstances surrounding the post-match incidents.

Nigeria secured qualification for the semi-finals through second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams.

Tensions flared at full time, with Algerian players expressing anger over what they believed were unfair officiating decisions. Reports indicate that some players attempted to confront referee Issa Sy and his assistants, prompting intervention by stadium security.

There were also reports of unrest among Algerian supporters in the stands, with attempts to breach security barriers and alleged vandalism of parts of the stadium.

CAF is expected to announce its findings and any disciplinary measures after concluding its investigation.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles squad trained behind closed doors in Rabat on Monday as they intensify preparations for the highly anticipated AFCON semi-final clash against host nation Morocco.

The team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, said the decision to shut the session to the public was taken to allow head coach Eric Chelle to conduct detailed tactical work away from outside scrutiny.

The closed-door training was held at the Complexe Mohammed VI in Rabat.

Efoghe also confirmed that the media will be granted access to the opening 15 minutes of Tuesday’s training session before the squad resumes private drills.

The Super Eagles are hoping to reach their second final since lifting the title in 2013 and finishing as runner-up in the last edition in Ivory Coast.

Morocco and Nigeria will clash at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium, Rabat, on Wednesday.
