Lagos applies to join Rivers state as co-respondent in FIRS’ appeal against a high court ruling for states to collect VAT

The Lagos State Government has applied to join Rivers state as co-respondent in the  Federal Inland Revenue Services’ appeal against a high court ruling for states to collect Value Added Tax.

Lagos state filed the application on Friday September 10, barely 24 hours after its state’s house of assembly passed a bill empowering the state to collect VAT and another bill which banned open-grazing in the state.

Punch reported that the Attorney General of Lagos State, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) informed the court of their application, which he said should be taken into consideration first before FIRS’ application for stay of execution.

Counsel for the FIRS, Mahmoud Magaji (SAN) however argued that their application for stay of execution should take precedence over the application for joinder. Backing his argument with the case of Pam V. Mohammed, Magaji stated that the court can restrict itself to the business of the day.

The court stood down the matter for the ruling after listening to submissions from all the parties.
